Mr. Smith is a former president of the Lowndes County Bar Association. He is a current member of the Defense Research Instituteas well as the Miss. Defense Lawyers' Association and serves as an editor for the Mississippi Defense Lawyers' Association quarterly publication. Mr. Smith serves his community as a board member of the Salvation Army, Kiwanis and the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. He has formerly served on the Habitat for Humanity Board and Bethany Christian Services Board. Mr. Smith is an active deacon at First Baptist Church where he also serves on the Strategic Planning Committee and teaches Sunday School. Nelson also serves as the current president of the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association in the city of Columbus.
